DIY Rose Water
Still have roses left? Make Rose Water. It’s one of my favorite and most cherished ways to get every last drop of beauty out of a bouquet — especially in February when everything feels soft, aromatic, and embraces the essence of romance. The delicate fragrance of rose water can truly transform your mood and elevate your everyday experiences.
Rose Water has so many wonderful uses: it calms skin irritations, reduces redness, refreshes the face, soothes the scalp, and adds a gentle, natural scent to your home. It’s simple yet sensory, and such a lovely ritual for nurturing both the body and spirit. You will find yourself enchanted by its versatility and the delightful aroma it brings into your life.
Here’s how to make your own exquisite rose water delicacy.
What You’ll Need
Freshly opened or wilted roses to capture their fragrant essence
Baking soda for a gentle cleansing touch
Colander or strainer to easily separate the petals
Large measuring cup to hold the final product
Distilled water to ensure purity and quality in your mixture
Witch hazel for its soothing properties
Oven‑proof bowl or ramekin to hold the floral treasures
Heavy saucepan with a lid to create the perfect steaming environment for your petals
Clean, covered jars to store your lovingly created rose water
How to Make It
Gently and lovingly remove the delicate petals from the stems, taking care not to bruise them.
Sprinkle the petals lightly with baking soda, then rinse them thoroughly with cold water to prep them for the infusion process.
Place an oven‑proof bowl or ramekin in the center of a deep stockpot, creating a cozy little home for your rose water to form.
Fill the ramekin ¾ full with distilled water to weigh it down so it stays stable during the process.
Arrange the beautiful rose petals carefully around the outside of the bowl, ensuring they surround the bowl evenly.
Pour distilled water into the pot until it reaches halfway up the sides of the bowl, ensuring the petals are fully covered to release all their goodness.
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid to steam the petals and capture their essence.
Bring everything to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer until the water changes color, becoming infused with the floral fragrance.
Press the petals down against the sides of the bowl to release more vibrant color and delightful fragrance into the water.
Keep covered and allow the petals to continue steaming in their fragrant environment.
Let everything cool completely to preserve the integrity of the rose water.
Strain the rose water carefully into a measuring cup, ensuring no petals are left behind in the liquid.
Pour the strained liquid into clean, tightly covered jars and refrigerate promptly.
Your lovingly created rose water will keep for about 2–3 weeks, allowing you to enjoy its benefits for a lovely duration.
Note: The color of your final product depends on the types of roses you choose. Deep red or pink roses will create a beautiful, soft pink water. Conversely, white roses produce a clear or pale yellow water, adding a unique charm to your creation.
