Most cast iron pans come with a light seasoning already in place.
But you may want to give it an additional coat based on the surface texture.
If it's a nice smooth surface, a good method of seasoning would be to grease the inside well & bake some cornbread. This will give you a sufficient baked in finish to start using the pan again after cleaning.
However, some cast iron pans have a more textured surface. With that type of pan, I like to give a good seasoning prior to putting it to work.
Here are the easy steps to follow for seasoning a new Cast Iron Pan:
Wash pan with hot water & a drop of Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap
Heat oven to 400°
Line a large baking sheet with foil
Place a cooling rack on top of the foil covered sheet pan
Generously coat the cast iron pan with choice of low smoke oil ie: Avocado, Grapeseed, Sunflower, or try my On Point Cast Iron Balm for even coverage
Place pan upside down on rack
Put in oven for 1 hour & turn off the heat
Allow cast iron to stay in the oven to completely cool - usually about another hour or more.
The pan is now ready for use!
